Neutral in register, it commonly recounts a feeling someone went through; 思いをした describes a past experience, while 思いをしたものだ can look back on a recurring one. Rather than emphasizing how intense a feeling is, it presents the feeling as an experience arising from a situation.
Do not treat 動詞辞書形+思いをする as a productive rule; 死ぬ思いをする is a fixed expression.
Note that the experiencer can say 嫌な思いをした even when someone else caused the feeling; the causer can say 嫌な思いをさせた.
- 羽目になるN1「羽目になる」means being forced into doing something one does not want to do, usually attaches to verbs, and is used only for unfortunate situations; 「思いをする」describes experiencing a particular feeling, usually attaches to adjectives, and can also be used for pleasant feelings. The two are not interchangeable.
- がするN4「がする」attaches to nouns like 音・匂い・吐き気・気 and indicates sounds, smells, physical sensations, or mental impressions arising naturally; 「思いをする」describes the feeling one comes away with from an experience, often in the past tense when looking back. The two are not interchangeable.
- ような気がするN3「ような気がする」is an uncertain judgment based on intuition about the present, the future, or the past, meaning 'it somehow feels like...'; 「思いをする」describes a feeling one genuinely experienced, usually attaching to adjectives of feeling. The two are not interchangeable.
- てたまらないN2「てたまらない」attaches to the て-form and emphasizes that an emotion or pain is so intense it is unbearable, mostly expressing the speaker's current feelings; 「思いをする」focuses on recounting the experience of having a particular feeling because of something, often in the past tense, so the two should not be directly swapped.
- てならないN2「てならない」emphasizes that an emotion or thought is strong and hard to suppress, mostly describing one's current mood, attaches to the て-form, and leans literary; 「思いをする」recounts the experience of having a particular feeling because of something, often in the past tense. The two should not be directly swapped.
- 始末だN1「始末だ」does not express a feeling; it lists a series of bad events and then points to an even worse outcome, with a tone of blame or resignation, and is used only for bad results; 「思いをする」describes feelings experienced firsthand, whether good or bad. The two are not interchangeable.
てたまらない and てならない emphasize the strength of a feeling, while がする and ような気がする express sensations or impressions. 羽目になる and 始末だ focus on an unwanted situation or outcome, rather than the feeling experienced.
