Basic greetings

Single lines · 6 lines

Practice three greetings for different times of day, plus the set phrases for a first meeting, a reunion after a long time, and leaving before others.

    Good morning.

At work, you can use it no matter the time of day, as long as it's the first time you're seeing someone that day.

    Hello.

    Good evening.

Nice to meet you. I look forward to knowing you.

Use 「はじめまして」 only the first time you meet someone; from the second meeting on, you can't say it anymore.

Long time no see. How have you been?

「お元気ですか」is only asked when you meet someone after a long time apart, and coworkers who see each other every day don't greet each other this way.

Excuse me, I'll be heading off first.

Said when leaving before others; those who stay behind reply with 「お疲(つか)れさまでした」.

First meeting

Dialogue · 6 lines

A complete conversation for a first meeting: you recognize the other person at an event, introduce yourselves, add each other on LINE, and then say goodbye.

  1. Li

Excuse me, are you Mr. Tanaka?

  2. Tanaka

    Yes, I'm Tanaka.

Never add さん when saying your own name — it's an honorific for other people.

  3. Li

Nice to meet you. My name is Ri.

「〜と申します」 is more polite than 「〜です」, commonly used when meeting someone for the first time or in formal situations.

  4. Tanaka

Likewise, it's a pleasure to meet you.

「こちらこそ」means the one who should be saying that is me, which makes it the natural reply when the other person greets you first.

  5. Li

Um... want to swap LINE info?

「〜ませんか」is the set phrase for invitations, leaving the other person more room to decline than 「〜ましょう」.

  6. Tanaka

Sounds good. Well then, see you tomorrow.
