A written, somewhat literary pattern used in explanations, articles, and accounts of where names, customs, or developments come from. It often pairs with naming expressions such as 〜と言われている or 〜と呼ばれる. It is close in meaning to ことから, but ところから sounds a little more formal and literary.
Note that the main clause usually states a fact, name, or result, not a request, command, or the speaker's own intention.
Do not use ところから in casual conversation, where から or ので sounds far more natural.
- ことからN2「ことから」 and 「ところから」 are basically the same in meaning and in how they attach to preceding words; both can explain the origin of a name, the basis for a judgment, or a result arising from it, and both belong to written language, so they are mostly interchangeable; 「ことから」 has a wider range of use and is more common.
- からしてN2「からして」 attaches only to nouns, is neutral in register, and mostly makes inferences from signs such as attitude or appearance, with 「ようだ」 or 「らしい」 often at the end of the sentence; it also has an analogical meaning of 'judging by just one thing... already...'. Use 「ところから」 when explaining the origin of a name.
- からすると / からすればN2「からすると」 attaches only to nouns, and the following clause must be an inference, judgment, or evaluation; it can also express a standpoint. 「ところから」 attaches to plain forms and the like, leans toward written language, and its following clause can be an objective result such as the origin of a name. They are similar only when expressing the basis for a judgment, and cannot be swapped freely.
- ところを見るとN2「ところを見ると」 makes inferences based on signs seen or heard on the spot, with 「ようだ」 or 「らしい」 often in the following clause; it works in both spoken and written language, and nouns can attach with 「の」. It cannot replace 「ところから」 when explaining the origin of a name or a cause-and-effect result.
- に基づいてN2「に基づいて」 attaches directly to nouns and means that an action or judgment is strictly based on data, rules, and the like; 「ところから」 attaches to clauses and explains the origin of a name or the cause of a judgment or result, focusing on drawing a conclusion from the characteristics of the preceding item, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
ところから is nearly interchangeable with ことから, the more common choice. からして (singling out one telling detail), からすると / からすれば ('judging from'), and ところを見ると (visible evidence for a guess) introduce grounds for an inference or judgment rather than the origin of a fact, while に基づいて ('based on') marks the foundation an action is carried out on, such as rules or data, not a cause or the source of a name.
