Can't remember which form 行きたい, 行ったら and 行きやすい each attach to? The table is split by the 8 attachment slots: first the form in each word class with notes, then the JLPT patterns that attach to it; tap an example to hear it.

nai-form42

This form takes ない, ず, なければ, (ら)れる, (さ)せる.

Show forms and notes
  • Godan (Type 1)書か
  • Ichidan (Type 2)食べ
  • Suru (Type 3)し(ない)/せ(ず)/さ(せる)
  • Kuru (Type 3)こ
  • i-adjective高く(ない)
  • na-adjective静かで(は)
  • noun学生で(は)

This slot holds only the elements that attach directly to the irrealis stem (ない, ず, れる, せる). Once it becomes a full ない form, it is a plain form in its own right — patterns like 「〜ないうちに」 and 「〜ないようにする」 belong in the plain-form slot, not here. Suru-verbs split three ways: し ない/せ ず/さ せる; 「気にせずに」 is very common, and writing it as 「気にしずに」 is a classic mistake.

masu-form, continuative form112

Takes ます, たい, ながら, やすい, にくい, すぎる, そう (appearance), なさい, and 方; another branch takes なる and する.

Show forms and notes

  • Ichidan (Type 2)食べ

  • i-adjective高(すぎる)/高く(なる)
  • na-adjective静か(すぎる)/静かに(なる)
  • noun学生に(なる)

One slot, two shapes: verbs take the ます form, adjectives take the stem. すぎる, そう (appearance), さ, and がる all attach here — which is why 行き過ぎ and 高すぎ sit side by side; ます itself attaches only to verbs. Adjectives and nouns have a separate branch of this form (高く, 静かに, 学生に) reserved for なる and する: 高くなる, 静かにする, 学生になる.
